Subject: First set the story of this show
One of those rare shows where the first set is the story. The rippin' Jackstraw with extra crisp Jerry playing sets the tone and what follows are "10" versions of CC Ryder, Althea (just smokin'), Supplication and Might as Well. Except for some extra-energetic Bobby screaming in Estimated outro (if you like that... I do) the second set is simply overshadowed by the explosive first set.

There was definitely some magic happening during the Fall '83 tour and this one is certainly a good example. I can't stop listening to Jack Straw and have to agree, the best I have ever heard. LL->Supp - wow....wow. Good China->Rider but have to say they played a stunning C->R at Syracuse just four days later (10/22) that is jaw dropping.
For those interested, you can actually watch a video post (albeit shaky) of the first set here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LK6eFvvZME

Maine had a double dose of Lazy Lightning -> Supplication in 1983. This one just crushes. What an electric jam. There's a lot of great music in the world, but they just don't make 'em like that any more. Tastefully delicate in spots, raunchy, barroom grit in others. Sigh . . .

I haven't listened to the second set yet, but the first set is fabulous. Jack Straw goes higher and higher. They Love Each Other carries the momentum and groove. Dupree's features a great Garcia solo. CC Rider actually shreds. Bob kills the slide guitar solo while the band is absolutely swinging behind him- you can tell that they can tell how hot they are playing. Althea is hot as always. The Supplication jam has a very hot groove that seems driven by Phil's bass thumping.

CCCC was a magic spot. A lot of great shows from this venue and this night is no exception. Both sets are outstanding, high energy affairs. Jerry's on and everyone else is full-steam ahead right with him. Great, hard driving show--Brent's keys keep things real friendly and bouncy sounding. Great sounding audience recording. For Althea hounds out there--sniff this one out.......

Quite possibly the best Jack Straw I've ever heard. The playing was tight and Jerry was on...some of the last best shows, in my opinion.
Since I have to give a rating to post, 5 stars for the Jack Straw.

Impressive show for the time. A blazing straw opens the show followed by a bouncy TLEO. The recording is excellent with a lot of corwd noise and good sound from the band. They lose some momentum mid-way through the set but regain it during a spirited Lazy>Supplication. I cant speak for the second set but the recording itself is worth the download. For the record the dead made two trips to Maine in '83...
